BREAST REDUCTION
You may be a good candidate for a breast reduction if you
have one or more of the following conditions:
Breasts that are too large in proportion to your body
frame
Heavy, pendulous breasts with nipples and areolas that
point downward.
One breast is much larger than the other.
Back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of
your breasts
Skin irritation beneath your breasts.
Indentations in your shoulders from tight bra straps.
Restriction of physical activity due to the size and
weight of your breasts.
Dissatisfaction or self-consciousness about the largeness
of your breasts.
A breast reduction can be performed at any age, but
plastic surgeons usually recommend waiting until breast development
has stopped.
Childbirth and breast-feeding may have significant
and unpredictable effects on the size and shape of your breasts.
Nevertheless, many women decide to undergo breast reduction
before having children and feel that they can address any
subsequent changes later. If you plan to breast-feed in the
future, you should discuss this with your plastic surgeon.
What is the procedure?
There are many variations to the design of the incisions
for breast reduction. The size and shape of your breasts,
as well as the desired amount of reduction, are factors that
will help your plastic surgeon determine the best technique
for you
In some instances, it may be possible to avoid the
vertical incision that runs from the bottom edge of the areola
to the breast crease or the horizontal incision underneath
the breast.
o With a breast reduction, rarely, if your breasts are extremely
large, the nipples and areolas may need to be completely detached
before they are shifted to a higher level. In such a case,
you will need to have made the decision to sacrifice sensation
and the possibility of breast-feeding in order to achieve
your desired breast size.
It reduces the size of excessively large breasts. If you feel
uncomfortable with your breasts or you feel they are unaesthetic,
if they make it difficult to find the right clothes, if they
make your back or neck hurt or if they make you feel ashamed,
then this is the right surgery for you.
It lifts hanging breasts due to factors such as age,
breastfeeding and gravity.
It improves your shape in the same way that a breast
lift does but, in this case, reduction is the priority.
It reduces the size of the areola, if it is too large.
It is advisable that you ask your surgeon whatever questions
you may have so as to do away with all those doubts and fears
so common for those who are about to undergo surgery. we will
gladly answer all the questions you may want to ask before
your trip and during the personal interview before the surgery.
It is advisable that you write down all the questions you
may have prior to the interview, so that you will be able
to read them to the physician and get answers for all of them.
Remember that smoking reduces the body's oxygenation,
and insufficient oxygenation may result in complications after
the surgery, such as, slower healing of wounds, thicker and
more visible scars, and even skin necrosis in the area around
the wounds. Therefore, if you are a smoker, we strongly recommend
you not to smoke during a few weeks prior to the surgery.
If you know that you are prone to developing keloids
or hypertrophic scars (excessive scar tissue), you should
tell your surgeon in advance, since the application of gel
or silicone strips may prevent this from happening.
You should carry with you loose-fitting and comfortable
clothes. Remember that there should be enough space for the
bandages between your skin and your clothes.
It is advisable that you get the medication indicated
by the physician in advance (antibiotics, anti-inflammatories,
analgesics), so that you will not have to take care of that
right after the surgery.
Try to get wet towels like those used for babies, they
are very useful when we cannot take a bath.
What does Breast Reduction surgery NOT do?
Even though it will make your body look more beautiful and
harmonious, and it will probably also improve your self-esteem,
it will not be enough to make you look perfect. We must be
realistic and accept that that kind of perfection does not
exist.
How is a Breast Reduction surgery performed?
Anesthesia
Local anesthesia and complementary sedation, or general anesthesia.
Surgery length
Two to four hours, according to the complexity of the case.
What does breast reduction surgery consist of?
The surgeon draws on the skin the future location of the nipples.
Then he performs a circular incision around each one of the
areolas. If the areola is too large, the incision may be done
inside its outline, so as to remove the part of it that is
nearest to the edge. All the time, the areola and the nipple
are kept joined to the breast by means of a pedicle. This
is very important for preserving the blood supply and sensibility,
and to avoid necrosis.
The surgeon performs a series of incisions under the areolas
that allow him to separate the rest of the skin. He then cuts
and folds the glandular tissue so as to fit the areolas in
the places he previously cut and marked. After that, he cuts
and removes the excess glandular tissue and skin until the
breast reaches the desired volume and shape. Finally, the
surgeon sutures all the incisions.
Hospitalization
You will have to stay hospitalized for one night.
The results
The results of breast reduction surgery are permanent. The
reduced breasts will not grow again. Your breasts will look
better for a long time and you will feel more comfortable
and relieved. In spite of the
Post operation
o The day after your, you will be encouraged to get out of
bed for short periods of time. After several days, you will
be able to move about more comfortably
o Straining, bending and lifting must be avoided, however,
since these activities might cause increased swelling or even
bleeding
o You may be instructed to sleep on your back to avoid pressure
on your breasts
o You will be instructed to wear a support bra for a few weeks,
until the swelling and discoloration of your breasts diminishes
o Generally, stitches will be removed in stages over a period
of approximately two weeks, beginning about one week after
surgery
o You may notice that you feel less sensation in the nipple
and areola areas. This usually is temporary. It may, however,
take weeks, months or even more than a year before sensation
returns to normal
o Your breasts may also require some time to assume a more
natural shape after a breast reduction in Argentina
o Incisions will initially be red or pink in color. They will
remain this way for many months following surgery.
What is the time to recovery for a breast reduction?
o After your breast reduction, it is often possible to return
to work within just a couple of weeks, depending on your job.
o In many instances, you can resume most of your normal activities,
including some form of mild exercise, after several weeks.
o You may continue to experience some mild, periodic discomfort
during this time, but such feelings are normal.
.
Bandages
In order to heal properly, you will have to wear a special
bandage on the treated area during approximately one week.
It is uncomfortable and tight but, unfortunately, it is necessary.
You will also have some flexible and thin drainage tubes applied,
they will drain off excess fluids from the wounds to an airtight
plastic bottle. These drainages help reduce the incidence
of bruises.
Removal of the stitches
7 to 10 days after the surgery.
Scars
The resulting scars will have a circular shape around the
areola and an inverted T right below (also called anchor).
The cross section of the T will coincide with the lower fold
of the breast.
The circular scar will be the most discreet one, since it
will be disguised by the outline of the areola.
The entire healing process may take between 6 and 9 months,
during which the scars will turn from reddish to pink, and
then to an almost imperceptible white.
Recovery
You will have to rest at the hotel during 48 hours. You will
probably feel a burning sensation during the first days and
discomfort when lifting your arms. From the fourth day onwards
you may be able to return to your social life and job, only
if does not require that you lift heavy objects. The surgeon
will indicate you what kind of bra will you be able to use.
You will be able to do physical exercise again 30 days after
the surgery.
Some people may experience depression during the recovery
period. This is very usual after any kind of surgery, regardless
of its triviality. You may even feel that you made a terrible
mistake in deciding to have a surgery. But you shouldn't worry.
Most of the people who today are happy and satisfied with
the results of a surgery have also gone through that phase.
Possible risks and complications
It is very unlikely for this procedure to present any complications
when performed by a qualified surgeon. However, every surgical
procedure, regardless of its triviality, has some risks and
we should always think of them as a possibility.
Adverse reactions to anesthesia.
Infections, although they very unusual if you take the antibiotics
your physician will prescribe.
Asymmetry. Even though the surgeon marks very carefully
the areas he is going to treat, there may be asymmetries in
1% of the cases, the most common one being the location of
the nipples. In approximately 3% of the cases, keloids or
hypertrophic scars (excessive scar tissue) may develop.
Dehiscence (the edges of the wound separate for some
few millimeters long, before the healing process is fully
completed) Usually, it tends to heal by itself. It is necessary
to keep the wound clean and disinfected until it heals completely.
Permanent or temporary loss of sensibility in the nipple.
Pulmonary thrombosis. It happens very rarely, but
if a blood clot travels through the bloodstream and reaches
the lungs, it may cause a cardiopulmonary arrest. In order
to prevent this from happening you should try to move your
legs and leave the bed as soon as you can. The areola and
nipple may suffer necrosis due to a poor blood flow. Even
though the surgeon takes all the necessary precautions to
prevent this from happening, it may happen anyway.
If you get pregnant after the surgery, your breasts will
suffer the same changes that every women's breasts suffer
during pregnancy.
