Breast Lift ( Mastopexy)
For whom?
The best candidates for a breast lift are healthy, emotionally-stable
women who are realistic about what the surgery can accomplish.
The best results for a breast lift are usually achieved
in women with small, sagging breasts. Breasts of any size
can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in heavy
breasts.
Many women seek a breast lift because pregnancy and nursing
have left them with stretched skin and less volume in their
breasts.
With breast lift, if you're planning to have more children,
it may be a good idea to postpone your breast lift .
While there are no special risks that affect future pregnancies
(for example, a breast lift usually doesn't interfere with
breast-feeding), pregnancy is likely to stretch your breasts
again and offset the results of the procedure.
What is the procedure for a breast lift?
For a breast lift a small incision is made and the prosthesis
is inserted between the gland and the breast plate and in
some cases (delicate skin and no gland) slithered under the
pectoral muscle.
Breast lift techniques may vary, but the most common procedure
involves an anchor-shaped incision following the natural contour
of the breast.
The incision outlines the area from which breast skin will
be removed and defines the new location for the nipple. When
the excess skin has been removed, the nipple and areola are
moved to the higher position. The skin surrounding the areola
is then brought down and together to reshape the breast. Stitches
are usually located around the areola, in a vertical line
extending downwards from the nipple area, and along the lower
crease of the breast, depending on the amount of skin resected.
Some patients, especially those with relatively small breasts
and minimal sagging, may be candidates for modified procedures
requiring less extensive incisions. One such procedure is
the "doughnut (or concentric) mastopexy," in which
circular incisions are made around the areola, and a doughnut-shaped
area of skin is removed.
If you're having an implant inserted along with your breast
lift, it will be placed in a pocket directly under the breast
tissue, or deeper, under the muscle of the chest wall.
Length of the operation breast lift
2 to 3 hours
Post operation
At some point in the first 24 to 48 hours after your breast
lift, you will experience swelling, bruising, numbness, discomfort
and temporary pain in the chest area following your breast
lift
During the first 15 days, you will feel temporary pain whenever
you tend to move your arms as your breast will be still fragile
and sore.
You will need 3 months at least to be accustomed to the
presence of the implant and be able to resume to normal activities
such as exercising, breast feeding and pregnancy.
Clinical and X ray tests of the breast need to be sustained
according to doctor's criteria
Unlike what you hear at times, flying and diving do not
have any effects on the surgery.
What is the time to recovery after a breast lift ?
Back to work: 1 week or more.
More strenuous activities: 1 month.
What does Breast Lift surgery do?
" It lifts hanging breasts due to factors such as age,
breastfeeding and gravity. It gives them a better shape.
" Take a look at yourself in the mirror: in an ideal
breast, the nipple is located at the same level as the fold
where the breast and the body come together. There is a range
of possibilities and, in fact, all women have different characteristics,
but an excessive deviation from this norm is reason enough
to think about having a breast lift.
" It reduces the size of the areola, if it is too large.
" It corrects preexisting asymmetries between both breasts.
" It may be performed together with a silicone implant
surgery if the patient also wishes to enlarge the size of
her breasts.
What does Breast Lift surgery NOT do?
" It does not in itself enhance the size of a woman's
breasts. If your only problem is the lack of volume, we recommend
that you consult about breast augmentation
" Even though it will make your body look more beautiful
and harmonious, and it will probably also improve your self-esteem,
it will not be enough to make you look perfect. We must be
realistic and accept that that kind of perfection does not
exist.
How is a Breast Lift surgery performed?
Anesthesia
Local anesthesia and complementary sedation, or general anesthesia.
Surgery length
Between one and three hours, according to the complexity of
the case.
What does breast lift surgery consist of?
If the correction necessary is small, it will be enough to
perform a circular incision around each one of the areolas.
If the areola is too large, the incision may be done inside
its outline, so as to remove the part of it that is nearest
to the edge. Then, another circular incision is done around
the first one, it may be concentric or it may be done a little
bit farther up if the areola and nipple need to be placed
higher.
The resulting 'ring' of skin between the too incisions is
removed and the edges are sutured.
When the correction needed is greater, it may be necessary
to complement the periareolar (circular) incisions with a
vertical one just below each one of them.
Hospitalization
You will have to stay hospitalized for one night.
The results
Even though the results of breast lift surgery are not permanent,
we may say that they last quite long.
Your breasts will look youthful and firmer for a long time.
